Monkey Fun Facts:
It is not quite known as to why monkeys were used but in the 17th century, a Japanese sculptor named Hidari Jongoro carved three monkeys to represent an adage which has since earned worldwide recognition. The sculpture which sits in the Nikko Tosho-gu shrine in Nikko, Japan, highlights three monkeys sitting in a row as one covers its eyes, the other its mouth and another, its ears. The sculpture in Japan is known to be a part of a much larger eight panel series which may have been influenced by the great Chinese philosopher, Confucius. Since the popularity of this Japanese sculpture, the three monkey carving is now recognized as “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” set.
